The Foolproof Formula for Writing a LinkedIn Post

If you’ve ever stared at the LinkedIn post box wondering what to say—or worse, how to say it—you’re not alone.

Most people aren’t struggling with what they know. They’re struggling with how to turn that knowledge into a post that someone will actually stop scrolling to read.

That’s why this month, we’re giving you our foolproof formula to write a post that not only feels natural, but drives engagement and positions you as a thought leader in your space. Over the last 6 years we have coached and worked 1:1 with thousands of professionals and have seen time and again how this formula truly works.

Let’s break it down 👇

✍️ The 4-Part Formula for a Strong LinkedIn Post

1. Start personal. Open with something human. A moment, a reflection, or a shift in perspective. It doesn’t have to be groundbreaking—it just has to be yours. Starting with a personal tone helps your audience feel connected before they even know what you’re talking about.

“This month, I finally made time to read the X Report—and I’m so glad I did. It had been sitting in my inbox for weeks, but once I opened it, I couldn’t stop thinking about the takeaways.”

2. Explain the thing. Now that you’ve drawn people in, explain the subject or moment. This is where you provide context: Was it a report, event, article, podcast, or conversation? Share what it was and why it mattered to you—this bridges your personal moment with professional insight.

“The report focused on [insert key theme], and its takeaways hit hard—especially for leaders navigating [relevant challenge]. It explored the tension between visibility and vulnerability in leadership, which is a conversation I’ve been having with clients often.”

3. Provide value. Give your audience a reason to keep reading—and come back for more. What stood out to you? What should they know? Share 2–3 key insights, actionable takeaways, or even a shift in perspective. This is where you go from “sharing” to “serving.”

“Here are three things that really stood out to me: 1️⃣ Leadership ambition isn’t the issue—visibility is. 2️⃣ Those who share insights consistently build more trust (and get more opportunities). 3️⃣ We need to stop chasing perfect posts and start sharing real ones. If you’re feeling stuck, start by reflecting on what you’ve learned lately—you probably have more to share than you think.”

4. End with an engaging question. Don’t just drop your thoughts and leave—invite a response. Ending with a question helps your post spark conversation, expand reach, and show that you value your network’s perspectives. It turns your post into a dialogue, not a monologue.

“Have you read anything lately that shifted your thinking? I’m always looking for more insight—and I’d love to hear what’s resonating with you this quarter.”

📈 Pro Tip: According to LinkedIn, posts that include both valuable takeaways and a question at the end can see up to 2x more engagement than those that don’t.

✅ What This Looks Like in Action

Here’s an example of the formula at work:

This week, I finally sat down to read the Women in Leadership Report from Deloitte—and I couldn’t put it down.

The report focused on the unique challenges women face moving from middle management to executive leadership, and the numbers were eye-opening.

Here are 3 takeaways that stuck with me:

  1. Leadership ambition isn’t the problem—visibility is.

  2. Women who built a strong external brand were promoted faster.

  3. Mentorship matters, but sponsorship moves the needle.

I’d love to know—what’s the most impactful report or article you’ve read so far this year?

🚫 What Not to Do

We’ve all seen it…

This. Is. A. LinkedIn. Post. That. Could. Be. An. Email.

(We love a dramatic pause—but only when there’s something worth pausing for.)

Avoid one-sentence “dramatic” lines unless there’s true impact behind it. Don’t be afraid to write like a human. Bring it back to your audience. How can you provide value?

📬 Whether you're writing your first LinkedIn post—or your 500th—this formula helps you build trust, add value, and stay true to your voice.
