1. What thought leadership is and why it's crucial

2. How to transform your subject matter expertise into thought leadership

3. How to own your thought leadership point of view (POV) on LinkedIn.

What is Thought Leadership and Why Do You Need It?

Thought leadership is the practice of sharing your unique insights, expertise, and perspectives to establish yourself as a trusted authority in your field. It's more than just being knowledgeable; it's about influencing and inspiring others with your vision and ideas.

Why You Need It:

  1. Builds Credibility: Demonstrating your expertise positions you as a credible source of information and a go-to person in your industry.

  2. Expands Your Network: Thought leadership helps you connect with like-minded professionals, industry leaders, and potential clients or collaborators.

  3. Creates Opportunities: From speaking engagements to career advancements, being recognized as a thought leader opens numerous doors.

  4. Drives Influence: Your ideas can shape industry trends, drive innovation, and impact decision-making processes.

Transform Your Subject Matter Expertise into Thought Leadership

Many professionals have subject matter expertise, but not all are thought leaders. Here’s how you can make the leap:

  1. Identify Your Unique Value Proposition: What unique insights or perspectives do you bring to your field? Focus on your experiences, successes, and lessons learned.

  2. Create High-Quality Content: Share your expertise through articles, whitepapers, videos, and presentations. Aim for content that offers actionable insights and real value to your audience.

  3. Engage with Your Community: Join conversations in your industry. Respond to comments, participate in discussions, and attend relevant events.

  4. Leverage Multiple Platforms: Don't limit yourself to one platform. You can use blogs, social media, webinars, and public speaking to share your insights widely.

Your Thought Leadership on LinkedIn

There’s no doubt that LinkedIn is the go to place for ideas and thought leadership. It is a powerful platform for establishing and raising visibility and credibility in your sector. Here’s how to make the most of it:

  1. Optimize Your Profile: Ensure your LinkedIn profile reflects your expertise and thought leadership aspirations. Use a professional photo, write a compelling headline, and craft a detailed summary showcasing your achievements and insights.

  2. Publish Regularly: Consistency is key. Share articles, posts, and updates regularly. Focus on topics that highlight your expertise and offer value to your network.

  3. Join and Contribute to Groups: LinkedIn Groups are excellent places to share your insights and engage with industry peers. Join relevant groups and be an active participant.

  4. Engage with Others: Thought leadership isn’t just about broadcasting your ideas. Engage with others' content, leave thoughtful comments, and share valuable insights from your connections.

  5. Measure and Adapt: Pay attention to the engagement your posts receive. Use analytics to understand what resonates with your audience and adapt your strategy accordingly.

Pick the 2-3 things you want to talk about and the things you want to be known for, and write about them again and again and again. When someone thinks of XYZ topic, you want to be positioned top of mind as the go-to expert for that topic.

Do this today! Be the Brand Activation:

Take out a piece of paper and write down your unique areas of subject matter expertise. If you were asked to be on a panel, what would the topic of the panel be? Write down four to five topics that you can speak creditably on. From there, build out your unique point of view under each of those bullets. You now have a strategic road map and can think about how to bring it to life - whether it’s on LinkedIn, the speeches that you give, or how you present yourself in your industry. Stay inspired and keep leading the way!
