July 2024 - You are the Brand: Building a Professional Brand in the Digital Age

Hello and welcome to the first edition of the Be the Brand newsletter. A newsletter that I hope will help you on your professional journey. For many years, I adopted an approach of silent marketing, but as the business has continued to grow and evolve I’ve been working hard at following more of my own advice, stepping out, talking about my work and adopting a “Be the Brand” approach.

If you are new to Be the Brand, we are a digital branding company obsessed with helping professionals learn how to leverage personal branding correctly to level up in their career. Our “zone of genius” is LinkedIn. There is just no doubt of the power of LinkedIn to help you get to where you want to be professionally. We take pride in our mission to partner with thoughtful professionals to help them accelerate their career goals and professional brand.

In this monthly newsletter, you can expect insights, strategies, and actionable tips designed to help you build and sustain a powerful brand in every aspect of your life.

For our first newsletter, we are going back to the basics and I am sharing with you my 5 non-negotiables when it comes to starting your professional branding journey. If you are staring from a point of overwhelm, there are a lot of mantras we could say here that are corny (though true) such as: “A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step,” or “We will eat the elephant one bite at a time.” But what I would say to you is just start. Follow these 5 steps below and just start. Everything you need to know about your personal brand already exists inside of you- you just need to start.

If you are just starting out and would also like a guide for how to refresh your LinkedIn profile send me a DM and I will send you a link to our free video for how to refresh your LinkedIn profile. It’s 10 minutes and well worth your time.

1. Define Your Brand Identity

  • Self-Assessment: Reflect on your core values, strengths, and passions. What makes you unique?

  • Brand Statement: Craft a clear and concise personal brand statement that encapsulates who you are and what you stand for.

  • Personal Message House: A tool created by Be the Brand, used to help walk clients through the process of identifying their brand purpose, brand pillars, and brand tone.

2. Optimize Your Digital Presence-

Your LinkedIn is the digital house you live in. It’s important that your LinkedIn profile serves as your digital home in the professional world, crucial for networking, showcasing your expertise, and building your personal brand.

  • LinkedIn Profile: Ensure your LinkedIn profile is complete and up-to-date. Use a professional headshot, compelling headline, and detailed summary.

  • Consistent Messaging: Maintain consistency across all online platforms. Your bio, profile pictures, and posts should reflect your brand identity.

3. Create and Share Valuable Content

Creating and sharing valuable content on LinkedIn is crucial for professionals because it establishes expertise, builds credibility, expands professional networks, and enhances career opportunities by showcasing knowledge and insights to a global audience.

  • Thought Leadership: Share your expertise by writing articles, posting updates, and engaging in discussions relevant to your industry.

  • Content Strategy: Develop a content calendar to ensure regular posting. Mix it up with articles, videos, and infographics to keep your audience engaged.

4. Engage with Your Network

  • Authentic Interactions: Comment on posts, share insights, and participate in group discussions to build relationships and increase visibility.

  • Network Building: Connect with industry leaders, colleagues, and potential clients. Personalize connection requests to make a memorable impression.

5. Leverage Analytics

Leveraging analytics on LinkedIn is important for professionals because it provides valuable insights into the performance of their content and profile. By understanding analytics, professionals can optimize their strategies, identify trends, gauge audience engagement, and ultimately enhance their visibility and impact within their industry or community on the platform.

  • Monitor Performance: Use LinkedIn analytics to track the performance of your posts and identify what resonates with your audience.

  • Refine Your Approach: Adjust your strategy based on insights from analytics to continually improve your branding efforts.

  • Metrics to Track: The two most important metrics to track on LinkedIn are engagement rate and reach rates because they indicate how effectively your content resonates with your audience and how widely it is being seen, allowing you to refine your strategy and maximize your impact on the platform.

Conclusion

Building a professional brand in the digital age is an ongoing process that requires intentionality and consistency. By defining your brand, optimizing your digital presence, creating valuable content, engaging with your network, and leveraging analytics, you can establish a strong personal brand that propels your career forward.
